The
1020 building, located
(map) in the SODO District of Seattle,
houses workspaces for a variety of artists and crafts people with
a wide range of creative disciplines including:
Fine Art, Stained Glass, Installation Art, Digital Media, Sculpture, Interior Design, Performance Art, Jewelry, Furniture Design, Product Design, Photography, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, and Architecture...
Over the years the building (Built in 1912) has housed numerous artists after being converted from a warehouse in the 90’s. Activism has fluctuated with the times, including groups like the late Keith Tabellione’s Art Star in 2000 and the group that founded 1020first.org in 2003.
In 2006 Ouch My Eye moved into the ground floor creating a permanent studio/art gallery with edgy programming. Since 2006 most of the original artists from the early part of the decade moved on, creating opportunities for a whole new group of talented artists.
In the spring of 2009, the tiny Occhio Café, opened adjacent to Ouch My Eye helping to re-establish the building as a creative community, and bring other artists in the neighborhood together. Occhio has breathed new life into the 1020 Building community bringing artists out of their studios to meet their neighbors.
In years past the 1020first.org group organized a monthly open house during the Pioneer Square Artwalk, but it proved too difficult to organize over the course of a year. The current artists in the building have teamed up with the Bemis Building to organize a joint open house 2-3 times annually and information on the next open house can be found on the Events page.
